The short answer first: Chalice Hymnal and Chalice Praise are compilations of hundreds of works owned by dozens of companies from whom CBP/Chalice Press purchased the rights. Those rights were purchased for use only in those two denominational hymnals. Because Chalice Hymnal and Chalice Praise were created before ebooks were created, CBP/Chalice Press did not acquire the digital rights. Times have changed, and we have researched the cost of tracing those steps, and those prices would be steep. It would be a better use of resources and time to create a new hymnal, which still sizes up as a formidable project that would need support from the entire Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Digital versions of those two books will not be produced, but when a new hymnal is created, digital rights will be a key ingredient.

The printer has not yet been selected, but printing will likely occur in the United States, shortening the delivery time many publishers have experienced over the last year due to supply-chain challenges. Even so, hymnals are printed on special special-order paper that is increasingly hard to get, requiring the shortened guaranteed-fulfillment timeline.

Chalice Hymnal was created as a joint project of CBP and what is now Disciples Home Missions. For several years, CBP and DHM have explored the possibilities of a new hymnal with many different possibilities and potential partners on the table. However, no direction has yet been identified on how a future hymnal might be created and produced.

One way to enrich your experience of the Lord's Supper is to sing songs designed for communion. Many songs about the cross, Christ's sacrifice for sins, and communing with Jesus are appropriate. But here are specific communion songs, arbitrarily divided into newer and older songs. Many of these, especially the older ones, have the lyrics available online. As you meditate, read out loud some of these wonderful poems of Eucharistic worship.

A rich collection of communion hymns is the Chalice Hymnal (St. Louis: Chalice Press, 1995), which serves the Disciples of Christ, who partake of the Lord's Supper each week. The hymnal contains 50 such hymns. For older communion hymns, a rich resource is Christian Worship: A Hymnal (Christian Board of Publication; St. Louis: The Bethany Press, 1941). The Hymnal 1982 (The Episcopal Church; Church Hymnal Corporation, 1985) is also a rich collection of mainly older songs, some translated from ancient hymns.

These of course are not all the hymnals we have in our collection. Some of our books are more manageable in size and only contain a select number of hymns from a particular hymnal. Making items available electronically through BARD has also eliminated the issue of physical size. Please let us know if you are looking for something in particular.

A flame within a chalice (a cup with a stem and foot) is a primary symbol of the Unitarian Universalist faith tradition. Many of our congregations kindle a flaming chalice in gatherings and worships and feature the chalice symbol prominently.

Hans Deutsch, an Austrian artist, first brought together the chalice and the flame as a Unitarian symbol during his work with the Unitarian Service Committee during World War II. To Deutsch, the image had connotations of sacrifice and love. 2ff7e9595c
